Ionisation is a technology that detects fast burning fires whereas optical sensors are better at detecting slow smoldering fires.

Areas such as kitchens and garages are common spots for false alarms caused by smoke even though no fire risk is present. Heat alarms are ideal for these locations as they record heat levels and only sound if they suggest that a fire risk is possible.
